Jingbirok (War memoirs by Yu Seongryong, 1695)The woodblocks for a document written by Ryu Seong-ryong (1542-1607), a scholar-official of the Joseon Dynasty, whose pen name was Seoae. Ryu describes what he experienced during the Imjin War (the Japanese invasion of Korea from 1592-1598) and the second war of Jeongyu (1597). Ryu wrote Jingbirok in his hometown after he retired from politics. His distinct purpose for writing the book was for it to be a cautionary reference for future generations. This book is a valuable resource as it’s based on historical fact as described by Ryu, who held a high-ranking position during a critical period of the Joseon Dynasty. The woodblocks were commissioned in 1647 by Ryu’s grandson, Jo Su-ik (1596-1674).
