Seonghaksipdo (Ten Diagrams on Sage Learning, 1681)"Woodblocks of Seonghaksipdo (Ten Diagrams on Sage Learning, 聖學十圖) by Yi Hwang (1501-1570). Originally, Seonghaksipdo was intended to be given to King Seonjo, who had just ascended to the throne in 1568. In the book, Yi illustrates the key concepts of “seonghak,” or sage learning, with pictures, in the hopes that King Seonjo would become a wise king. At a gyeongyeon (a regular discussion on academic topics and policies), Yi explained the diagrams based on what he had learned from various writings by Neo-Confucian scholars. Oh Do-il (1645-1703) compiled the book in 1681, and a second edition was published in 1741. Seonghak refers to studying the learning of the sages, which was what the Joseon kings were supposed to learn. It depicts ten diagrams: Taegeukdo, Seomyeongdo, Sohakdo, Daehakdo, Baekrokdonggyudo, Simtongseongjeongdo, Simhakdo, Inseoldo, Gyeongjaejamdo and Seukheunyamaejamdo. They represent ethics, justice benevolence, the cultivation of the mind and other golden principles."
