Andong Kwon Clan Genealogy (later 18th Century)A genealogy of the Andong Kwon clan is the oldest known genealogy in Korea. (Two entries prior to this it says 3 other clan genealogies were the oldest.) These three volumes, published in 1476 during the seventh year of King Seongjong’s reign, adopted the Chinese era naming system and were called Seonghwabo, referring to the era name of the Chinese Ming Dynasty. In the early Joseon period, Kwon Je was a senior minister (Jwachanseong) at the state council located in Uijeongbu. He was also the Minister of Rites and in charge of rituals, culture, diplomacy and state exams. Kwon compiled the family genealogy modeled after China’s Sossibo (genealogy of the So family). His son, Kwon Ram (1416-1465) collected more documents and made revisions, but died before finishing the massive task. Kwon Je’s nephew, Seo Geo-jeong (1420-1488) -- an academician in the Office of Royal Decrees during the reign of Seongjong -- edited and proofread the documents with the help of Sangju-based judge Park Won-chang and Daegu-based magistrate Choi Ho-won. In 1476, Seo had Yun Ho (1424-1496), governor of Gyeongsang Province, published the book. The woodblocks, based on the 15th century version, were commissioned in the 18th century by Kwon Myeong-wu (1722-1795).
